Can You Charge an Electric Car in the Rain?

If you've got a My Green Power EV charger at your home or workplace, at some point you'll want to charge your electric vehicle when it's raining.  So is it safe to charge an electric vehicle in the rain?

Yes it is!

Although water and electricity don't mix well, it's perfectly safe to charge your electric vehicle in the rain.

It might feel scary, plugging in your electric vehicle in a downpour, but it's safe to charge your car in almost all weather conditions.  Electric vehicles are engineered to withstand water and rain, as well as dusty conditions, extreme temperatures and humidity.

The Nissan LEAF is actually rated to be safe even if submerged in water at 1 meter for 30 minutes - hopefully this isn't the sort of weather you'll encounter while charging your car!

So yes, charging your car in the rain is perfectly safe.  The most dangerous thing that could happen is probably tripping over the cables, but that's a different matter...
