How Many Electric Cars are there in the UK?

Electric cars have been available for a while, but it's only in the past few years that they have really started to become mainstream. Many people are still unaware of how many electric cars there are on UK roads.

How Many Electric Cars are on UK roads?

Last month (October 2022) there were 19,933 new registrations of battery / electric cars, with is 14.8% of all new registrations.  In September, when the new reg plate came out, there were over 38,000 registrations, which was over 16% or the market.

According to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the proportion of electric cars sold from 2016 to 2022 to date is:

  • 2016: 1.4%
  • 2017: 1.8%
  • 2018: 2.6%
  • 2019: 3.2%
  • 2020: 10.7%
  • 2021: 18.6%
  • 2022 (to date): 20.8%

There are now almost 600,000 battery powered electric cars on UK roads, and a further 400,000 plug in hydrids.  That's a total of one million electric vehicles in the UK.
